Welcome to Cowell Tactical

A family-owned & operated business providing custom tactical gear for over 40 years.

In 1979, in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California, our parents Richard and Patricia Cowell began designing and manufacturing nylon and canvas load bearing vests and holsters for local law enforcement. Richard’s experience as a sheriff’s deputy in Sacramento County and Patricia’s sewing and design skills were the foundation of the business that grew with our growing family.

When the business began, all seven Cowell children were employed and our family’s collective, creative drive explored and met the changing needs of law enforcement and public service professionals. During these decades, our clientele expanded to local, state, and federal agencies from across the country. The year 2005 brought big changes to Cowell Tactical, as our family and business moved to northern Idaho and settled in the beautiful Kootenai Valley. Richard and Patricia retired here and are currently enjoying their 18 grandchildren.

Today, a second and third generation of Cowells strive to continue what was started over 40 years ago. Richard and Patricia’s son Matthew and their daughter Julieann now run the business together – managing a production room with several local employees. When Julieann’s not busy managing the sewing room and coordinating orders, you’ll find her out at the wildlife refuge exploring the birds and nature, baking a delicious loaf of bread, or cozying up to a good book.In December of 2017, Matthew married Shelli and they’ve been enjoying adventures together as a new family. Baby Hadley was born in September of 2020, and being a dad has been the best adventure yet! When Matt is not busy answering calls and keeping production on time, you’ll probably find him out playing fetch with Kip, his English Springer Spaniel, or riding his gravel bike around the mountains. Cowell Tactical remains a family-owned and operated business with an uncompromising commitment to custom designs and customer satisfaction. Thank you for your support.
